5 AAC Blocks Myths That Could Cost You BIG

In the construction industry, AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) blocks are gaining recognition for their unique features and sustainability. Originating from Sweden in the 1920s, these innovative building materials have risen to global popularity, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional bricks. Despite this, misconceptions about AAC blocks abound. In this blog, we’re going to dive deep into some of the popular myths surrounding AAC blocks and debunk them, shedding light on the true capabilities and benefits of this innovative construction material.

The evolution of AAC blocks in construction

AAC blocks represent a milestone in construction material technology. Crafted from a blend of cement, lime, sand, water, and a dash of aluminum powder, these blocks undergo a process of autoclaving under high pressure and steam. This process creates a lightweight, porous structure that is not only lighter than traditional bricks but also possesses superior properties like enhanced thermal insulation and fire resistance.

However, despite their century-long history and increasing usage, misconceptions about AAC blocks continue to circulate. These myths often stem from a lack of understanding of the technical aspects of AAC blocks. Let’s examine these myths in detail.

Myth 1: AAC blocks lack strength

Reality: This myth is far from the truth. AAC blocks are surprisingly robust, with a compressive strength typically ranging between 3 to 4.5 N/mm². This strength is imparted during the autoclaving process, where the material is subjected to high pressure and temperature, resulting in a solid yet lightweight structure. Their strength makes them suitable for both non-load-bearing and load-bearing walls, challenging the misconception that their lightweight nature compromises their structural integrity.

Myth 2: Poor insulators of heat and sound

Reality: AAC blocks are, in fact, exceptional insulators. Their unique porous structure, filled with tiny air cells, significantly reduces thermal conductivity to around 0.1-0.2 W/mK. This is markedly lower than traditional bricks, making AAC blocks more effective in insulating against heat and cold. Additionally, their porous nature also lends excellent sound insulation properties, reducing noise transmission and enhancing the acoustic comfort in buildings.

Myth 3: Too costly for practical use

Reality: While the initial purchase price of AAC blocks may be higher than traditional bricks, they offer long-term economic benefits. Their lightweight nature significantly reduces transportation and handling costs. The uniformity in size and shape of AAC blocks simplifies the installation process, cutting down on labor costs and construction time. Furthermore, their superior insulation properties can lead to considerable savings in heating and cooling expenses, making them a cost-effective option in the long run.

Myth 4: Difficult to work with

Reality: Contrary to this myth, AAC blocks are quite user-friendly. Their consistent size and shape simplify the laying process, making them easier to install than irregular traditional bricks. They can be easily cut, drilled into, and shaped, allowing for greater design flexibility and faster construction timelines. This ease of handling makes AAC blocks a preferred choice among builders and DIY enthusiasts.

Myth 5: Not suitable for load-bearing structures

Reality: Despite their lightweight, AAC blocks boast excellent load-bearing capacity. They are commonly used in both load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls across various types of buildings. Their structural integrity and uniformity provide sufficient strength for most residential and commercial building requirements, debunking the myth that they are unsuitable for structural purposes.

Embracing the future with AAC Blocks

AAC blocks are at the forefront of building material innovation, combining strength, insulation properties, cost-effectiveness, and ease of installation. By understanding the technical realities of AAC blocks, we can move towards more sustainable, efficient, and innovative building practices. As the construction industry evolves, AAC blocks continue to prove their worth, demonstrating how traditional building methods can be enhanced with modern technological advancements.
